In a remarkable stride towards sustainable energy practices, Robinsons Starmills in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines, has set a new benchmark by becoming the world’s largest solar-powered shopping mall. The ambitious project, launched on May 30, 2016, features a colossal 2.88-megawatt solar power system. This installation, comprising 10,880 solar panels, spans an impressive 1.75 hectares of roof space.
The solar power system at Robinsons Starmills is designed to offset up to 95% of the mall’s daytime energy demand. This significant reduction in reliance on conventional energy sources is projected to decrease carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2.25 million kilograms annually. Such a reduction is comparable to planting 100,000 trees or eliminating the carbon emissions generated by driving 5.5 million miles in an average car.
This groundbreaking initiative was made possible through the collaboration with Solenergy Systems Inc., a key player in the renewable energy sector. Solenergy was commissioned to install the solar panels, setting a new global record that surpasses the previous milestone held by SM North Edsa, which had a 1.5-megawatt installation unveiled in 2014.
Frederick Go, the president of Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), emphasized the company’s commitment to adopting sustainable practices and reducing its carbon footprint by transitioning to renewable energy sources. He articulated that solar energy was chosen due to its sustainability, low maintenance requirements, and zero emissions. Furthermore, he highlighted the continual advancements in solar technology, which have improved efficiency and reduced production costs.
Simultaneously, Solenergy Systems Inc. was tasked with a 742-kilowatt peak solar power system for Robinsons Angeles shopping mall, showcasing the company’s capability to manage multiple projects concurrently. This venture follows their previous collaboration on Robinsons Place Iloilo.
Go also acknowledged the local government’s initiatives in Pampanga, such as installing bicycle lanes and promoting the use of tap water, aligning with broader environmental awareness efforts. He stated that Robinsons Starmills is part of the company’s broader vision to install solar power systems across all 41 RLC malls, contributing to the global shift towards renewable energy.
Looking forward, RLC is committed to integrating solar power facilities into the design of future malls, ensuring that roof layouts maximize solar panel efficiency and harness the abundant energy provided by the sun.
